One Room Challenge | Week 2 | Toddler Girl’s Bedroom

ORC Fall 2020: Sharing the mood board and design plans for our girl’s room

A busy week at work has meant slow progress on the One Room Challenge but I’m excited to share the mood board for our toddler girl’s room design! This will definitely evolve over the weeks but it should give a good idea of the feeeeling I’m going for in the space.

A little insight to the thinking behind the boho bedroom design:

I wanted to create a space that felt sweet and fun for her now (she’s only two!) but would easily transition as she grows. (Isn’t that usually the goal?) That’s where the muted-but-playful colors come in. They’re almost a rainbow, but much more subdued.

I have to confess: I am not a “pink” girl. I’ve rebelled against the color my whole life. But I’m warming up to dusty rose and mauve tones and thought our daughter’s room was the perfect space to step out of my comfort zone with a few pink-ish accents.

I love the boho trend and, having grown up with a basket weaver mother, I’m always drawn to woven textures. You can definitely see elements of that in this space.

So, flash back to this ORC Week 1 “Before” photo and here’s what we already have for the room:

  • woven ceiling light (actual / similar)

  • Benjamin Moore Stonewashed wall color

  • gorgeous rug

  • LVP floors

Not a bad head start! Here’s what’s left to make or install over the next five weeks:

DIY headboard
This one is still swirling around in my brain and will be the “big DIY” of the space. I love the idea of an arched headboard with woven texture and possibly some green accents. But I want to try something a bit different from the cane you see in the mood board. Stay tuned and I’ll share when I figure it out!

finish big girl bed
If you follow my @onesmithstory Instagram stories you know I ordered this bed (similar) but felt it was a bit too warm in color for our floors (see photo) so I sanded it down. I hope to stain and assemble it this weekend!

swing chair

hang adorable swing chair
What kid (okay, person) doesn’t want a swing in their room?! I snatched this one up. It’s a great price and the quality feels really nice! I got hardware to hang it and plan to have some fun with DIY tassels and/or twinkle lights to make it an extra special spot.

picking wildflowers

wall of flowers
My tiny helpers picked wildflowers from our back acreage and they’re currently hang drying. I plan to use these CB2 vases I’ve had for nearly a decade and create a whimsical wall of flowers around the swing!

curtains
I need to make an IKEA run for a longer curtain rod and some more curtains.

bookshelf styling
We have a white IKEA billy bookshelf from our old playroom that has found a new home in our daughter’s space. I plan to style it in a way that’s simple and useful for her, and add meaningful and beautiful pieces on the upper shelves.

bedding
I took advantage of a Beddy’s sale and got this perfectly neutral, appropriately named, “Naturally Boho” bedding. (I love that Beddy’s includes every piece of beddings so you don’t have to buy separate pillow cases, sheets, etc.) I already have this adorable Target pillow and plan to add a pop of yellow with this Target throw blanket.

night stand
Still TBD what I want to do for this! Any suggestions? Comment below!
